Presenting Problems: Youth placed with Open Line have a history of problem behaviors, which may consist of:
- Emotional / behavioral problems
- Substance abuse
- Problems relating to family
- Lack of structure
- Problems related to gang involvement
- Multiple placement failures / AWOLS
The primary purpose of our program is to address the above mentioned problems through:
- A highly structured program of group living
- Regular school attendance, enrichment classes and optional on-grounds classroom instruction when indicated
- A combination of individual and group therapy
Group Living: Each of our six well appointed homes house 6 residents, 2 per bedroom. A direct care staff-to-resident ratio of 2:6 is complimented by 3 in-field Supervisors, two Program Managers and two Master level Therapists. Our typical direct care staff has a BA Degree in a Behavioral Science or five or more years of experience working in a therapeutic milieu. Staff evaluate each resident daily in 25 areas including:
- Getting up on time
- Personal hygiene
- Bedroom and house chores
- Behavior at meals
- Peer cooperation
- Study hour participation
- Homework completion
- Participation in individual and group therapy
Evaluations earn points which determine weekly advancement through the level system, weekly allowances and outing privileges.
Educational Component: Residents who are new to Open Line are enrolled in one of our two community schools, Oasis Community School and ERC (Education Resource Center) or one of several "mainstream" schools where Open Line has developed effective educational partnerships. On-grounds enrichment classes include multi-media art and guitar lessons. Throughout their stay at Open Line, students are advised and encouraged regarding the importance of post high school education and are directed toward potential resources.
Independent Living Skills: Open Line provides a full emersion Independent Living Skills program for all placements which addresses nutrition, meal planning and preparation, employment, apartment hunting, money and banking, caring for an apartment, appropriate dress, clothes shopping and caring for one's wardrobe.
